Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury: The Renaissance Man
A Death Anniversary Tribute from Rupkala (Creative Visual Primary Art School)
December 20th: Remembering a Visionary
Today, December 20th, we mark the death anniversary of Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury (1863–1915). A grandfather to the legendary Satyajit Ray, Upendrakishore was a polymath who reshaped Bengali culture. He was a master storyteller, a painter, a violinist, and a pioneering technologist. He founded U. Ray and Sons, introducing modern halftone blockmaking to South Asia, and wrote scientific papers on light and printing that were acclaimed globally.
"He showed us that the printing press is as much an instrument of art as the violin. His life was a symphony of science and creativity."
The Rupkala Connection: Art in Precision
At Rupkala, Upendrakishore represents the perfect union of imagination and technique. He didn't just draw illustrations for Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne; he mastered the chemistry to print them. We encourage our students to follow his path—to be curious about how their art is made and shared. His legacy teaches us that true creativity involves both the dreaming mind and the skilled hand.
