The Universal Declaration: Our Shared Foundation

Human Rights Day, observed every year on December 10th, commemorates the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This milestone document proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being—regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, a testament to its universal importance.

"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home..." - Eleanor Roosevelt's timeless words remind us that respect begins in our immediate environment, including the classroom.

- Inspired by the UDHR

The Rupkala Connection: Art as a Right to Expression

For Rupkala, the spirit of Human Rights Day is essential to our mission. The right to free expression (Article 19) is what allows our students to pick up a brush and articulate their unique visions without fear. We teach our young artists that every person is a masterpiece, inherently deserving of dignity and respect. Just as a canvas holds every color equally, our school strives to be an inclusive space where creativity and individual rights are not just taught, but lived. Let us use art to paint a future where every right is fully realized.
